We are Safe and Sound!

September 25, 2017 / marine mammal rescue

We would like to thank all of our guests and supporters who reached out before, during, and after Hurricane Irma. We are so fortunate that all of our humans and marine animals are safe. After many days of extensive cleanup, we are happy to announce that the Dolphins Plus Bayside facility is back in business!

But, we need your help! When the category 4 barreled into our shores, our Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder (DPMMR) Oceanside facility, that focuses to aid and rescue marine mammals throughout the Florida Keys, was left behind harshly damaged. Please help us rebuild our facility and continue to aid and rescue the marine animals in our very backyard!

DPMMR focuses on saving marine animals in emergency situations. But we can’t save them without our functioning facility. The effects of Hurricane Irma still pose a threat to dolphins inhabiting the waters around the Florida Keys. Debris and garbage showered the ecosystem where loved dolphins inhabit daily. After storms like this, it is not uncommon for these creatures to mistake garbage for food, get stranded, or become tangled and caught in netlike wreckage.

This is why we turn to you, our friends and planet-neighbors, to help us by donating supplies and funds, so that we may continue to serve our environment and steer marine mammals out of harm’s way.

Supplies can be sent to 31 Corrine Place, Key Largo, FL 33037
or donate directly at www.dpmmr.org.

Items for donation:

  • Fencing
  • Multiple generators (40 amp or bigger) to operate freezer
  • Pick up truck
  • Multiple passenger van
  • Industrial Ice Machines (Manitwoc - ice makers)
  • Computers (2 PC laptop and 2 desktop Macs) to enter dolphin data for health records and research
  • Tools (DeWalt Drill set battery operated)

Why DPMMR is important

DPMMR remains the only whale and dolphin rescue team covering 10,000 square miles of habitat in the Florida Keys. For more than 30 years, the team has focused on the rescue of marine mammals and has responded to more that 640 whale and dolphin stranding incidents. Donate now to continue our mission – to aid and rescue our friends in the sea!
